OMIs humble help to Yolanda victims'

TODAY marks
the first year anniversary of Typhoon ‘Haiyan,’ known in the Philippines as
Typhoon Yolanda,” one of the strongest tropical cyclones ever recorded, which
devastated portions of Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines.

It was the
deadliest Philippine typhoon on record, killing at least 6,300 people. ‘Haiyan’
was also the strongest storm recorded at landfall, and unofficially the
strongest typhoon ever recorded in terms of wind speed.

CBCP declares Nat’l Day of Prayer on ‘Yolanda’ anniversary

MANILA – In unity with the survivors of super typhoon Yolanda, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) declares a National Day of Prayer on Nov. 8, the first anniversary of the natural calamity. On Nov. 8, 2014, the Filipino nation will commemorate the anniversary of typhoon Yolanda that has ravaged the country’s Central Visayas region. Thus, we declare Nov. 8 this year as a National Day of Prayer, especially for the victims and survivors of the typhoon,” CBCP president Archbishop Socrates Villegas said in a circular issued Nov. 4.

Pope Francis appoints new Philippine bishop

MANILA — Pope Francis has appointed Manila Auxiliary Bishop Bernardino Cortez as the new Bishop of the Prelature of Infanta in Quezon province. The appointment was announced at 12 noon in Rome (7pm, Manila time) on Monday, October 27. Cortez will succeed Archbishop Rolando Tria Tirona as the fourth bishop of Infanta. The diocese was left vacant since November 2012, when then Bishop Rolando Tria Tirona was named Archbishop of Nueva Caceres. Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle congratulated Cortez as he responds to his new mission.
