COTABATO CITY --- Two agencies in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao got the 2017 Red Orchid Award from the Department of Health for having religiously banned smoking among employees.

John Magno, regional education secretary of ARMM, said on Saturday that they received this week a Red Orchid citation plaque from Health Secretary Francisco Duque III.

The grant of the Red Orchid citation is a yearly activity of the central office of the Department of Health.

It is premised on extensive surveys on the implementation of DOH’s anti-smoking campaign in all government offices.

The plaque Magno’s office received was signed by Duque last December 6.
It indicated that the DepEd-ARMM garnered a rating of 91 to 100 percent in its compliance with the advocacy of the department’s anti-smoking advocacy in all government offices throughout the country.

“We would not have achieved this feat if not for the support of our rank-and-file personnel,” Magno said.

He said it was not too difficult to enforce an anti-smoking ban in their office inside the 32-hectare ARMM capitol in Cotabato City since the region’s chief executive, Gov. Mujiv Hataman, is a non-smoker.

The office of Myra Mangkabung, regional secretary of ARMM’s Department of Science and Technology, also received a 2017 Red Orchid Award.

Mangkabung said credit for their having been awarded by the office of Duque with the Red Orchid citation has to go to all his subordinates strictly observing their no-smoking policy in work areas.
