Gerry Roxas Foundation honors ARMM exec
COTABATO CITY– Regional Governor Mujiv Hataman of the Autonomous Region in
Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) was recognized by Gerry Roxas Leadership Foundation for
his contribution to the expansion of Barangay Justice System (BJP) in the
region.
Hataman was
conferred with the Gerry Roxas Leadership Award during ceremonies held at Kia
Theatre in Quezon City Monday, he said today.
The awarding
rites also marked the 60th anniversary of the Gerry Roxas Foundation, the
organization which conferred the said award.
Hataman has
become a priceless ally in the implementation of the program as he empowered
barangay justice advocates (BJAs), making sure that these advocates also
contributed significantly to the ongoing Mindnao Peace Process.
Part of
good governance is making sure that justice is within the people's reach, especially
in times of conflict, Hataman said in a statement.
The Barangay
Justice Program has helped us make justice a reality for the Bangsamoro people,
bringing us a step closer to lasting peace, Hataman added.
The program
had major impact in helping resolve local conflicts in the region that ran for
decades and have claimed lives from both warring clans.
BJAs was initially
implemented in Maguindanao and has achieved a 92 percent conflict resolution
record within a three-year period, with 1,700 conflicts resolved during
2009-2012.
The success of
the project prompted Hataman to help expand the project to other ARMM provinces
and assist more BJAs, given its potential to be responsive to the unique
socio-political context in the region, the Gerry Roxas Foundtion said in a
statement.
The BJP is a
project of the Gerry Roxas Foundation in the ARMM which began in 2002.
It used
culturally-sensitive modes of dispute resolution among multi-ethnic
groups to promote peace.
Muslim clan
wars and family feuds are seen by peace advocates as major hindrance to the
attainment of genuine peace in Muslim Mindanao.
