COTABATO CITY –-Military authorities have alerted its force multiplier in North Cotabato and South Cotabato following intensified offensives by communist rebels on soft targets.

Capt. Silver Belvis, speaking for the 39th Infantry Battalion based in North Cotabato, said New Peoples Army (NPA) hitmen killed an off-duty militiamen in Barangay Tumanding, ARakan, North Cotabato Wednesday.

He was the third member of Citizen Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) killed in five weeks.

CAFGU Angelito Lamana was killed inside his house by NPAs under Guerilla Front 53. He was assigned at a CAFGU detachment in Salasang area in Barangay Tumanding.

The NPAs are active in the village and continue to subject residents to collection of “protection money and revolutionary taxes.”

“He was hog-tied before he was shot dead,” Belvis said.

On Sept. 20, NPAs killed CAFGU member Joel Batawan in an ambush in Barangay Santo Niño, also in Arakan. NPAs also shot dead three days earlier Jeffrey Bitonio, also a CAFGU member, in Barangay Anapolon, Arakan.

Meanwhile, police are looking at the NPAs to be behind the murder of Police Officer 2 Charlie Liva in Tupi, South Cotabato Thursday.

Senior Supt. Franklin Alverto, provincial police director, said the involvement of NPAs was one of the possible motiveS.

PO2 Liva was driving his motorbike going to Gen. Santos City when gunmen, in separate motorbike, shot him in the head and body along the highway in Tupi town.

Earlier, the NPAs said it will launch tactical offensives after the Marawi City crisis since President Duterte had said the military will shift to offensives versus communist rebels.
