KIDAPAWAN CITY  – The Catholic Church here has formed a negotiating panel that will work for the immediate and safe release of a police officer abducted by suspects communist rebels last month.

Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo, DD, bishop of the Diocese of Kidapawan, confirmed to reporters that Senior Inspector Menardo Cui is in the hands of communist New Peoples Army in the hinterlands of North Cotabato.

Bagaforo told Church-run Radio DXND that Cui, deputy police chief of President Roxas, North Cotabato is alive and prayed he will be with his family soon.

“That is fake news,” Bagaforo said when asked about reports the abducted police officer is already dead.   The prelate formed a crisis management team and tasked Diocesan Priest Pol Paracha to open communication lines with the police officer’s captors.

The NPAs have not issued any statement regarding the Cui kidnapping that took place on December 28 at a KTV bar in Barangay Poblacion, President Roxas, North Cotabato.

Cui’s wife, Florelie who had been fighting cancer, died over depression in a hospital in Kidapawan City two days after he was snatched.

Felomina, the police officer’s mother, Cui said it was Florelie who received the call from the President Roxas Police Office that her husband was abducted by gunmen.

She said Florelie who has been battling cancer was so depressed of her husband’s abduction.

Felomina said Florelie had difficulty breathing and had to be rushed to hospital in Kidapawan City where he expired on Dec. 31. (Edwin O. Fernandez)
