Migratory birds sighted in Sarangani
SARANGANI - Six hundred seventy-eight Chinese Sparrowhawks and one Crested Honey Buzzard were sighted yesterday, September 19, by the Raptor Monitoring Team of the Sarangani Province's Environmental Conservation and Protection Center (ECPC) during their annual monitoring of migratory raptors at Brgy. Rio del Pilar, Glan town.
According to ECPC, birds from neighboring countries such as Japan, Taiwan and China migrate to Indonesia during autumn season in search for suitable living areas.
The ECPC said that the country, being part of the East Asian-Australasian flyway, is a significant stopover for the raptors' survival.
The protection center added that during the birds' trip to Indonesia, the forests of Glan in Sarangani Province serve as their roosting sites to rest and feed before their long flight crossing the Celebes Sea.
The monitoring activity is in partnership with the Municipal Government of Glan, barangay council of Barangays Cross, Rio del Pilar and Batulaki, Raptorwatch Network Philippines and USAID Protect Wildlife.
It is also an effort of the Sarangani Provincial Government to keep an eye on the population of migratory birds and to conserve and protect the province's remaining forests.
