2 motorists die in Kabacan, North Cotabato highway mishap

KABACAN, North Cotabato -- Two motorists were killed in a highway accident in Sitio Malabuaya, Barangay Kayaga here Saturday noon.  

The victims, Nasrula Pamansag, 17 and Mansur Ismael, 16, both of Barnagay Balungis, Pikit, North Cotabato, died respectively, at the accident site and in the hospital. 

Investigation showed that the two were hit by a Nissan Sentra (TEM-116) driven by ex-soldier Rodolfo Lago, 68, a resident of Pikit.

Grade 3 pupil shows will to finish education

STO NINO, South Cotabato -- To continue his education, a Grade 3 pupil of J. Blanco Elementary School here brings daily his younger brother to his classroom as nobody takes care of him back home.

Angelo Baño has been bringing his 2-year-old brother to school so he will not miss classes, according to his teacher Shyla Mie Brillantes Blasico.

Angelo lost his mother last year due to illness while his father has to leave home to earn a living. Blasico said Angelo's younger brother sits in her class as "guest pupil."  

Angelo told his teachers nobody cares for his brother so he bring him along so he won't miss classes.

Blasico is appealing for help for the two poor children. The South Cotabato DSWD office is attending to the children's case.

Tantangan carnappers tried, failed to kill pedicab driver

TANTANGAN, South Cotabato -- A pedicab driver survived an attack by his two passengers in Barangay San Felipe here Thursday night but lost his tricycle to two thieves.

Jope Rasay, 39, of Koronadal City, was hired by two men to bring them to Barangay San Felipe at about 11 p.m.  Upon arrival in the agreed destination, the two alighted but one of them hit Rasay in the head with a hard object.  

Rasay tried to flee but was hit once more.  He lost consciousness and collapsed.  Passersby brought him to the hospital where he is recuperating.

Newly-wed man shot dead in Cotabato City

COTABATO CITY -- A recently married man was executed by still unidentified gunmen in front of his wife along a busy Don Rufino Alonzo Avenue here Friday afternoon.

Saydi Macargas, 28 of Barangay Tamontaka died on the spot from multiple gunshot wounds in the head and body.

Responding police found 13 empty shells for cal. 45 and 9mm pistols.  Police said Macargas and his wife Nurhanie Sacop were walking along Don Rufino Alonzo at 5 p.m. when the suspects opened fire on him.  His wife was unhurt.

Motive of the attack and identities of the suspects remained unknown as of posting.

Woman arrested for qualified theft

COTABATO CITY -- Police in Datu Odin Sinsuat (DOS), Maguindanao have arrested Friday Lumen Damaso, 23, accounting clerk of Compact Construction firm in Cotabato, for theft charges.

Chief Inspector Achmad Alibonga, DOS town police chief, said police arrested Damaso based on arrest warrant issued by Judge Bansawan Ibrahim of Regional Trical Court Branch 15 for Qualified Theft.

Damaso allegedly robbed the firm of P750,000 cash while working at the firm's accounting office. She is currently detained at DOS lock up cell.

City health workers start deworming of pupils

COTABATO CITY - To save school children from worms and malnutrition, the Cotabato City health office has started deworming of pupils in various schools in the city.

Veronica Jumuad, city health and education promotion officer, said the program has so far served more than 50 percent of all public schools in the city.

The same program will also be undertaken in private schools to save the children from various diseases.
