NORTH COTABATO --- Communist rebels executed Tuesday a barangay official who was supportive of the government’s pacification campaign in Magpet town in North Cotabato.

The victim, Valeriano Birondo, councilor in Barangay Mahongkog in Magpet, was also vocal against the collection of “protection money” by the New People’s Army from local peasant families.

Police investigators said Tuesday that Birondo was on his way to his farm early Tuesday when NPAs blocked his path and herded him to a secluded area where they repeatedly hacked him with machetes.

The rebels finished him off with assault rifles after the hacking frenzy.

One of his attackers was overheard by witnesses announcing loudly that they executed Birondo for crimes against the NPA as they scampered away.

Captain Silver Belvis, spokesman of the Army’s 39th Infantry Battalion, said the rebels behind the gruesome murder of Birondo belong to the NPA’s Guerilla Front 72.

The group is feared for its brutality on civilians suspected of conniving with the military.

It is also feared for its wanton use of booby traps and roadside bombs against non-military targets to sow fear and force villagers into paying “protection money” on periodic basis.
