The Oblates of Mary Immaculate in the Philippines condemn the latest act of violence that took the lives of several people and injured scores of others in Davao City.  We offer our prayers for the victims and their families and friends, asking for comfort in times of grief, and healing in the midst of pain.

We look to our government to identify, apprehend, and prosecute the perpetrators of this violence before the bar of justice. In this time of collective grief, we call on people of all faiths and of goodwill to help ease the pain by drawing on our better selves rather than exacerbate an already difficult situation by our insensitivity or malice.

We reiterate our denunciation of all forms of needless violence, regardless of who the perpetrators and victims are, at all times, and in all places.  Violence begets violence, and nobody wins in a spiral of death-dealing.  Difficult as it may be, we espouse the way of Christ, which calls for conversion of hearts and obedience to God, in whose image and likeness we have been fashioned, and who saw all of creation to be good.

May Mary, patroness of our country, console all who suffer from violence with her motherly care, and teach us how to carry anguish in our hearts, in the same heroic way she bore Jesus’ agony and death.
