KORONADAL CITY - More than 400 senior citizens from various areas in Region 12 today attended the opening ceremonies of the annual Elderly Filipino Week at the SMRAA sports complex here.

Aimed at honoring the region’s elders, the gathering was led by Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth-XII), Department of Health, Social Welfare and development (DOH -12 and DSWD-12) and senior citizens organizations from four provinces of the SOCCSKSARGEN region.

The elders were treated with free breakfast, coffee and entertainment by the organizers, including awarding of raffle prizes.

Speaking to the senior citizens (only few of them have golden hairs), PhilHealth 12 Regional Vice President Dr. Miriam Grace G. Pamonag, MD, asked them if all are Philhealth members.

Some raised their hands, others did not.

"Some of you did not know whether you are members of Philhealth or not," she said.

She quickly added hat every Filipino senior citizen is now automatic member of Philhealth and may avail of the corporation’s health programs.

The crowd applauded.

Ahead of formal programs at the complex, the elders had a walk at the stadium’s oval tract to show the elders can still, walk and some can still run.

Pamonag said the Filipino Elderly Week was participated and the seniors look for another similar event a year from now.

"Our presence here shows we still can do what we want,” Pamonag said in the vernacular.

She started her speech with a message: “Hello, my future classmates,” admitting in five years she will be a senior citizen.
