Authorities seized in separate raids in Sultan Kudarat province the past four days eight unlicensed guns whose owners are now detained for prosecution.

Senior Supt. Raul Supiter, provincial police director, said on Sunday that the feat was an offshoot of a renewed community-driven crackdown on possession of unregistered firearms which they launched last week.

The firearms Supiter and his men confiscated in separate operations in different Sultan Kudarat towns consists of three M-16 rifles, a gauge-12 shotgun, a 9-millimeter MP-5 submachinegun, two .45 caliber pistols and an AK-47 rifle.

The raids that resulted in the recovery of the firearms were covered with warrants issued by Judge Alandrex Betoya of the Regional Trial Court Branch 16 in Kabacan, North Cotabato.

“We are thankful to the confidential informants, among them barangay leaders and local officials, who provided us good information that hastened the recovery of these firearms,” Supiter said.

Supiter said among those detained for keeping unlicensed guns is Zahara Pendatun Maulana, municipal administrator of the seaside Palimbang town in Sultan Kudarat.

Maulana is sister of Palimbang’s incumbent mayor, Abubakar.

Also detained were Maulana’s aides, Daud Gulinda, and Ali Matabalao.

Supiter said two other arrested offenders, Dris Gana and Kamsa Gandanga, shall also be charged with violation of Republic Act 10591, which prohibits possession of unlicensed guns.
