KALAMANSIG, Sultan Kudarat -- At least 10 houses made of light materials were destroyed in storm surge that hit coastal communities here.

Mayor Ronan Garcia said the affected families are now housed at the municipal gymnasium in Barangay Poblacion, and covered courts in Barangay Dumangas Nuevo and Sta. Maria.

Heavily affected villages are those of Barangay Risan Talisay and Port Area, Barangay Poblacion.

Residents said it was the first storm surge due to weather disturbances to hit the coastal barangays in recent years.

Mayor Garcia said local government employees, Barangay officials, rescuers, barangay workers, social workers, midwives and other volunteers are now at work "but we will appreciate additional help from the community."

"We are in need of big kalderos and utensils to prepare food. Ready-to-eat food packs are welcome too.
Please coordinate efforts with our local MDRRM or MSWD," Garcia said.
