COTABATO CITY – The father of one of the 58 people that perished in the November 23, 2009 Maguindanao Massacre has forgiven the ailing former Maguindanao Datu Andal Ampatuan, Sr. for whatever involvement he had in the carnage.Former Cotabato City councilor Marino Ridao, Sr. on Thursday told reporters that as a Catholic, he has no way but grant forgiveness for the death of his son, Anthony, one of the massacre victims.Anthony was an employee then of a government entity based in Koronadal City and was not among a group the massacre suspects were after of.The suspects mistook Anthony’s car as part of the convoy they were to flag down to prevent passengers from proceeding to the provincial capitol to file there the certificate of candidacy for Maguindanao governor of then Buluan Vice-Mayor Esmael Mangudadatu.Mangudadatu’s wife, Genalyn, was one of those in the convoy members of the Ampatuan clan herded into a hill along the highway, where passengers were killed one after another using assault rifles and machineguns. The Ampatuans were rabidly opposed to the plan of Mangudadatu to contest the supposed candidacy in May 2013 of a favored bet, Andal Ampatuan, Jr. I have forgiven them because my family abides by the preaching which calls on us to forgive people that have wronged us first before we can be forgiven by God from our wrongdoings,” said Ridao.Ridao was a mathematics professor in a state university in Maguindanao for almost four decades before he became councilor in Cotabato City for three consecutive terms.Relatives of Ampatuan in Shariff Aguak, the hometown of the alleged masterminds in the Maguindanao Massacre, are now preparing for the demise of the former governor, who had ruled the province from 1998 to 2007 with an iron fist and absolute intolerance for political opposition. The governor’s younger brother, Pandag, told reporters Wednesday he had prepared a grave where to bury Ampatuan within 24 hours after his death.Muslims bury their dead immediately after death based on Islamic tradition.Ampatuan, earlier diagnosed as suffering from terminal liver cancer, slipped to coma early this week while at the National Kidney Transplant Institute and has not regained consciousness since.
