BULUAN, Maguindanao --- More than 30 Barangays in five Maguindanao towns near the 220,000-hectare Liguasan Delta are inundated since Wednesday by floods spawned by heavy downpours early this week. The floods that hit low-lying areas in Sultan sa Barongis, Rajah Buayan, Datu Piang, Shariff Saidona and Dati Salibo towns, all in the second district of Maguindanao, also resulted to heavy crop losses, according to Gov. Esmael Mangudadatu. Farmers in these areas have not even fully recovered yet from the losses they had as a result of the drought from November last year to early April this year,” Mangudadatu said. The affected towns are near the Liguasan Delta, a catch basin for dozens of large rivers that spring from nearby hinterlands in the provinces of Sultan Kudarat, North Cotabato and South Cotabato.Maguindanao’s provincial administrator, Engr. Wahab Tunga, said employees of Mangudadatu’s office are now repacking some five tons of food supplies for villagers in the flooded areas.Tunga said the People’s Medical Team of the provincial government will oversee the relief works for the flood victims.Lynette Estandarte, the provincial budget officer, said they have also been receiving reports, from barangay officials, on the continuing rise of the level of waters in rivers straddling through other low-lying towns in the province.Estandarte is helping Mangudadatu supervise the medical and emergency response team in the province, which has 36 towns, more than half of them along the oft-flooded Liguasan Delta.Estandarte said the Philippine Army’s 6thInfantry Division is now helping monitor the levels of the rivers, which drains into the vast Liguasan Delta.
