No local campaign on Good Friday, Comelec says

COTABATO CITY -- Campaigning on Good Friday is prohibited and violators will be charged accordingly, the Commission on Elections today said.Campaign period for local candidates starts on March 25 or 45 days up to May 7, a day before the May9 national and local elections but it being Good Friday, local aspirants are advised to start political campaign on Saturday, March 26.Lawyer James Jimenez, speaking for the poll body, said in a statement that theOmnibus Election Code bans campaigning on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and the day before election day. Jimenez also advised local candidates to remove propaganda materials placed outside authorized common poster areas 72 hours before March 25 or the candidates may be charged with violating election laws.Election rules clearly states that candidates or their political parties are only allowed to post campaign materials to Comelec identifiedcommon poster areas.Jimenez said under the rules, local candidates are entitled to not more than a total of 60 minutes of TV ads on a per station basis and 90 minutes of radio commercials, also on a per station basis, whether by purchase or donation.He explained that violation of electioncampaign rules carries a penalty of one to six years’ imprisonment, disqualification from public office and removal of the right to vote.
