PNP-ARMM awards Medalya ng Kadakilaan to slain Marawi police chief

SK PENDATUN, Maguindanao – The Philippine National Police (PNP) Posthumous
Awardand Medalya ng Kadakilaan (PNP Heroism Award) was awarded to Police Supt. Al
Abner Wahab Santos, police chief of Marawi City, who was killed on October 17,
officials said today.
Chief
Supt. Ronald Estilles, PNP-ARMM regional director, led the regional police
officials and personnel in honouring the late Supt. Santos during simple
ceremonies held at Camp SK Pendatun parade grounds here Monday.
Santos’
mother received the award.
Estilles
said the Medalya ng Kadakilaan was awarded to Supt. Santos for conspicuous
courage and gallantry of acts displayed to duty during his stint as Chief of
Police, Marawi City Police Station from August 20, 2015 to October 16, 2015.”

siblings and close relatives witnessed the ceremonies.

Santos
was driving his black Mitsubishi Montero on his way back to the Marawi City PNP
when gunmen, on board similar vehicle, opened fire on him using high powered
firearms. He died on the spot.Estilles
said the late police official has been very active and determined in the
implementation of laws on illegal drugs which have become rampant in Marawi
City.
Santos
dismantled several drug dens, led the arrest of illegal drug peddlers, users
and suppliers.
A police officer who asked not to be named said Santos was a verydedicated police officer who have made the police organization proud by
rejecting bribes frompersons engaged in illegal drugs.Following
the murder of Santos, police and military authorities have imposed a total gun
ban inside Marawi City. Campaign against illegal drugs have been intensified.
Regional
Gov. Mujiv Hataman of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) condemned
the attack and lauded Santos for offering his life in his efforts to restore
normalcy in Marawi City.
Hataman,
chair of the regional peace and order council, also created Task Force Ranao, a
composite Army, PNP and anti-narcotics agents in Marawi and Lanao del Sur.
