KORONADAL CITY -- More than 6,000 individuals joined this year's Tree Growing Festival, an annual event in the local government's efforts to cushion the impact of climate change.Koronadal City Mayor Peter Miguel spearheaded this year's tree planting activity as he celebrated his 47th natal day today. We might not directly benefit the trees that we plant today but our children and the next generation will surely benefit from it, Miguel said during the opening program at the city's welcome rotunda before the planters moved to upland villages of the city to plant trees.Malacanang declared June 29 as special non-working holiday in the city to allow even government workers participate in the activity. At least 250,000 seedlings of various species are expected to be planted today.Miguel rallied the people who failed to join this year's tree planting activity to plant trees in front of their homes or in their backyard to support the government's greening program.Koronadal City Administrator Cyrus Urbano also urged motorists to slow down along major highways where there is tree planting activity.Eliseo Silvino, a city resident, said he joined the tree planting activity not for his sake but for everybody's sake. Especially our children's children and the next generation, they will be the beneficiary of this activity, Silvino said.
