Police Inspector, 7 others hurt in Saranggani grenade attack

KORONADAL CITY – A town police deputy chief, five policemen and two others were hurt
in a grenade attack in Maasim, Saranggani province Monday night, police said.

Galgo, regional police spokesperson, said the grenade attack occurred shortly before
9 p.m. near the town’s health center inside the government compound.
Galgo
identified the victims as Police Insp. Danilo Abataya, Maasim deputy police
station chief, Police Officers (PO1) Almasir Tingkasan, Romel Badua, Rowell
Sobretodo and Sukran Donisa Sugod and, PO2 Mark Victor Naya, Jetphonie
Navales, a nurse and tricycle driver Leonardo dela Pena.
Galgo told
reporters here that the police victims were part of a team securing civilians
during the town’s Kestebeng festival.
Two men riding
tandem on a motorbike passed by the waiting shed near the health center and
tossed a fragmentation grenade then sped away.
The victims,
Galgo said, sustained shrapnel injuries in various parts of their bodies and
now confined to a hospital in Gen. Santos City.
Our investigators
are still determining the motive and the persons behind it,” Galgo said, adding
that witnesses have provided the police with physical description of the
suspects.
