LANAO DEL SUR -- Vice Gov. Mamintal Adiong, Jr. suspended on Tuesday classes in all towns in Lanao del Sur and in Marawi City due to heavy rains and strong winds spawned by Tropical Storm Basyang.
Adiong, in a directive issued Tuesday morning, said the suspension of classes in local elementary, high school and college institutions is meant to ensure the safety of residents from the storm, whose effects are now felt in many southern towns and provinces.
Adiong said the emergency memorandum was premised on recommendation of the Lanao del Sur Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

Thousands of residents in the province were badly affected by Tropical Storm Vinta that pummeled parts of Mindanao last December.
Rampaging floodwaters spawned by heavy rains then swept through more than a dozen Lanao del Sur towns, destroying houses and dislocating thousands of villagers.
