Landslides hit North Cotabato-Bukidnon highway
CARMEN, North
Cotabato – A light to heavy down pour Monday triggered landslides along Sayre highway
that connects North Cotabato and Bukidnon and stranded commuters for about
seven hours, authorities said today.
Cynthia
Ortega, North Cotabato provincial disaster risk reduction management council
(PDRRMC) chair, said the landslides occurred at about 6 p.m. when portions of
the mountain in Barangay Tampad, Carmen, North Cotabato collapsed.
As per report,
about 30 feet high of soil slid toward the highway making in unpassable,”
Ortega told DXND Radyo Bida in Filipino.
After receiving
the reported landslides, Ortega said the provincial engineering office quickly
sent personnel, pay loaders and graders to clear the highway of soil and
boulders.
Nobody was
hurt in the incident.
She said the
engineering personnel worked overnight in clearing the road network and ensure the
safety of commuters.
She said at
past 12 midnight, half of the road was opened and at about 4 a.m. boulders and
soil were totally removed.
There was
moderate to heavy downpour yesterday and that contributed to the landslides,”
Ortega said. The earthquake that hit previously in Carmen could have loosened
the soil thus the landslide,” she said, adding that no earthquake hit Carmen town yesterday. She said commuters
were advised to take precautionary measures to avoid accidents.
