Midsayap's garbage gatherers haul IED
COTABATO CITY-- garbage
collectors in Midsayap, North Cotabato on Sunday night had the greatest
haul in life that could have cost their lives - an improvised bomb
among a pile of garbage.
Supt. Tom Tuzon, Midsayap town police chief, said one of the garbage collectors on a
night shift alerted the police about his discovery, a powerful improvised
explosive device.
He said the
man, who asked not to be named, found the IED fashioned from 81 mm mortar in
the file of garbage in Barangay Malamote, Midsayap, North Cotabato at 9 p.m.
Quoting
garbage gatherers, Tuzon said they last loaded sacks of garbage near the town's
old terminal and proceeded to the dump site in Barangay Malamote.
He said the
man found something heavy in a plastic bag, circular and have some wires.
He
suspected it could be a bomb so they alerted the police, Tuzon said.
Army and
police bomb experts confirmed it was an IED with mobile phone as triggering
mechanism.
The IED was live and could explode anytime before it was found, Tuzon added.
Tuzon appealed to the
residents not to tinker with anything they suspect as a bomb. Instead, they
should alert the police or local officials to avoid accidents.
