Pres.Aquino to address labor convention in GenSan
KORONADAL CITY
– President Aquino will visit Gen. Santos City on October 22 to attend the National
Public Employment Service (PESO) Convention in General Santos City, regional labor
officials said today.
Ofelia
Domingo, DOLE 12 regional director, said that aside from President Benigno
Aquino III, who will be the keynote speaker, top officials of the labor department,
regional directors, bureau heads, program managers and Public Employment
Services Office (PESO) managers throughout the country will attend the event.
This is in
line with DOLE’s preparation for the upcoming Association of Southeast Asian
Nations (ASEAN) economic integration next year.
Among the
things to be discussed are the opportunities that would be available for our
workers, even the opportunities of the ASEAN integration,” Domingo told DXOM FM
Koronadal Monday.
Domingo admitted
that in order to compete with other ASEAN-member countries, worker’s productivity
in the Philippines must be increased.
We have to be
competitive because right now it’s the name of the game, other ASEAN countries
has invested so much for productivity and innovation,” she said.
DOLE is now
upgrading the current quality of basic education, technical-vocational
education, and higher education in the country through Philippine
Qualifications Framework (PQF), which is one of the requirements for the
expected free-flow of labor in the ASEAN region by 2015.
She said at
least 6.5 million migrant workers in ASEAN are Filipinos which is expected to
escalate next year.
Founded on
August 8,1967, ASEAN aims to speed up economic growth, social progress,
cultural development and promote regional peace among its members, including
the Philippines, Brunie, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar,
Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
