KORONADAL
CITY, -- Hundreds of environmentalists today started planting trees around the
city as the 5th Tree Growing Festival kicks off here.

The
tree planting was launched as the city and nearby towns in South Cotabato were
still reeling from the effects of flashfloods last week that claimed lives,
properties and damaged infrastructure.

After
a brief program at the city’s Welcome Rotunda, a tribal activity was conducted
to ensure the success of the tree planting program.

Speaking
to Radyo Bida Koronadal, Mayor Peter Miguel declared that rain or shine the
tree planting program will push through.

The
group, composed of students, government and private employees, volunteers and every
Juan,” aims to plant 250 assorted seedlings in different areas around the city.

Malacanang
has declared June 29 special non working holiday to allow participation of the
government and private sectors.

Miguel
said about 5,000 individuals are participating in this noble activity.

For
those who failed to participate in today’s tree planting activity, Miguel said
they can still share the general efforts by simply planting trees in their respective
backyard or anywhere in the surrounding provided it will not hamper public
roads and residential areas.
