MARAWI CITY -Marawi City is on the threshold of full urbanization and motorization, many municipalities, mainly the capital towns of provinces, have attained cityhood status despite their having agriculture as the principal economic base.
The Department of Public Works and Highways in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (DPWH-ARMM) noted in its review of Lanao del Sur infrastructure sector that the high levels of congestion, poor condition of parts of the road network, inadequate connectivity for inter-city or inter-regional movement, and the lack of sustainable road safety strategy had reduced the efficiency of the road sector in promoting economic growth and providing safe access in the countryside.
On Sept 22, Regional Governor Mujiv Hataman and Marawi City Mayor Sultan Fahad Salic entered a Memorandum of Agreement on two infra projects Concreting of Dulay- Cabasaran Road (1.0 km length) and Concreting of Cabingan – Bacung Road (1km length) having both 12 million appropriation budget each. The alternative road will minimize the travel time and fuel cost from traffic at the center Marawi wherein travelers from Basak area, Marawi City can avoid the traffic congestion in proceeding to Iligan City.
ARMM Public WorksSec. Don Mustapha Loong, in a phone interview,said that a good facility like roads can minimize associated problems of congestion, air and noise pollution.Loong said that the decision should be taken now because it will affect how people will live in these cities in the future.
Mayor Sultan Fahad Salik had said that Marawi City is similar to Metro Manila and many other cities, heavy traffic is one of the challenges of our city.
Given the assurance for the security and safety of the residents as well as the implementation of the infrastructure projects in the city, Lanao del Sur 1 District Engineer Luvismina Sani who had previously assessed the technical capability and equipment of Marawi City, recommended for approval the request by the City of Marawi to undertake the implementation of the above stated roads by MOA.
