Displaced families in Sultan Kudarat town rising
KIDAPAWAN CITY
– Hundreds of Manobo tribesmen have fled to safer grounds as the military
continued its military operations against a band of New Peoples Army (NPA) trying
to establish a Front base in Sen. Ninoy Aquino, Sultan Kudarat.
About 360
families are now temporarily housed at evacuation centers in Barangay Nati,
officials said.
The displaced
families were from the villages of
Mipangkag,
Pgbuguan, Bagong Silang, Mulawin, Balete, Tungaobatang, Kipulao and Humanay.
Four communist
guerrillas were killed while another was captured as the fighting continues,
Colonel Mel Feliciano, 601st brigade chief, said.
A soldier was
wounded during the first skirmishes Sunday.
Village
officials said some of the displaced families stay in their relatives’ homes
while the barangay is providing them food provisions.
First Lieutenant
Mark Soria, commander of the 33rd bravo company, said his men
clashed with about 100 NPA rebels belonging to Front 73 in the borders of South
Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat.
Sen. Ninoy
Aquino Mayor Dante Mangaan said the local government is also extending assistance
to the affected families. He also lauded
the local Church for providing assistance to Manobo tribes people.
