Maguindanao farmers lose millions of agri-crops to floods

COTABATO CITY – As the proverb saying goes “Don't count your chickens until they are hatched.”

This is how a farmer described his fate while trying to salvage his due for harvest palay that was submerged by flood water following torrential rains that hit Maguindanao.

“We are about to harvest our palay this week, pera na sana,” the teary-eyed said. “This is our only source of livelihood after getting affected by the effects of pandemic.”

READI reaches out to flood-stricken communities

COTABATO CITY --- The Bangsamoro government is now reaching out to villagers hit by floods that swept through several towns in Maguindanao and North Cotabato following heavy rains this week.

The Rapid Emergency Action on Disaster Incidence (READI) contingent of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao dispatched teams Wednesday to assess the extent of flooding in villages in the two provinces.

DENR-12 joins Sept 18 World Bamboo Day

The DENR-12 will be joining the Forest Management Bureau (FMB) and the world in the celebration of the World Bamboo Day on September 18, 2020, with a theme: “Pamanang Kawayan: Luntiang Ginto ng Kagubatan”

This is in support of the advocacy and thrust of Secretary Roy A. Cimatu for the department towards rehabilitation and reforestation using bamboo and to develop Bamboo plantations for the wood industry in the country.

Dugong and dolphins sighted in Sarangani Bay

DUGONG AND DOLPHINS.

Hundreds of dolphins and one dugong were spotted last August 25-28 in Sarangani Bay during the monthly marine mammal monitoring of the DENR-12 together with the Protected Area Management Office (PAMO) of Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (SBPS), Sarangani Environmental Conservation and Protection Center (ECPC), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources XII and General Santos City Environment and Natural Resources Office.

Red-backed sea eagle rescued in Maguindanao

                      

COTABATO CITY - The BARMM-MENRE, through CENRO-1A Maguindanao and the Biodiversity Management Services, has rescued a Brahminy Kite (Haliastur indus) or red-backed sea eagle, locally known as ‘Lawin,’ that was found by a concerned citizen in Bulalo, Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao.

North Cotabato floods submerge 100 homes in Midsayap

MIDSAYAP, North Cotabato – A day-long heavy downpour Saturday triggered flash floods in North Cotabato as major riber tributaries have overflowed.

In Barangay Kadigasan here, residents were "lockdown" inside their homes as the water leverl along waterways and canals rose to as high as waist level. 

Barangay Kadigasan chairperson Norodin Mohammad while huge part of the village have been underwater for more than six hours, no resident have fled to safer grounds since the water subsided later in the day on Saturday.

3 tarsiers rescued, freed in Sarangani

TARSIERS IN SARANGANI.

DENR Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (PENRO) of Sarangani Renato C. Domingo revealed that a concerned citizen surrendered three Philippine Tarsiers (Carlito syrichta) in his office in Alabel, Sarangani on Monday.

PENRO Domingo said that Engelberto J. Gran together with his men found the small primates in Gran's farm at Barangay Bagakay in Alabel.

Tarsier na na-rescue sa Mlang, North Cotabato, ibinalik sa kanyang natural habitat

KIDAPAWAN CITY - Ang tarsier na na rescue sa Purok San Isidro, Barangay Baguntapay, M'lang, North Cotabato ay ibinalik na sa gubat ng Barangay Dunguan, malapit sa Liguasan Marsh area.

Ito na ang panglimang pagkakataon na may na rescue na tarsier sa Mlang mula noong nakaraang taon.

 

 

U.S. funds P 1.1-B PH biodiversity project

Manila, August 11, 2020 — THE U.S. government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has launched a P 1.1 billion ($22 million) biodiversity project with the Philippine Department of the Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

Dubbed the Philippines Sustainable Interventions for Biodiversity, Oceans, and Landscapes (SIBOL), the project is designed to support the continuing management of the country’s natural resources and combat environmental crimes and hazards.

Another Basilan greenhouse up

COTABATO CITY --- The provincial government of Basilan is setting up another large greenhouse for vegetables and other short-term crops in support of its food sufficiency program.

The office of Basilan Gov. Jim Salliman said in a statement Wednesday that their second greenhouse project is located in Barangay Taberlongan in Maluso town.

The Salliman administration is also presently setting up a multi-million ice plant and cold storage facility in Maluso, one of the fishing hubs in the island Basilan province.
