DAF-ARMM launches project to help poor
COTABATO CITY --A cup of brown rice will be donated to every hash tag in a campaign of Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao’s agriculture department for unpolished brown rice.Alexander Alonto Jr. regional secretary of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF-ARMM),said as part of simultaneous regional launching across the country, the agency has launched #BROWN4Good campaign on Wednesday.
The campaign encourages Filipinos to utilize social media awareness of the benefits of healthy yet cheap brown rice by posting photos of themselves while buying, cooking or eating the brown rice,” Alonto said.
Simply, the post must be accompanied with he hash tag #BROWN4Good and #ARMM.
Every post of hash tag corresponds a cup of rice to be given to partner charities in the region,” Alonto explained. The social media campaign will last until October 31 this year.
Brown rice is a whole grain or unpolished version of white rice. It contains higher amounts of protein, dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants.
The key here is not about the planter, it is about the milling process where the nutrition value of the grain usually go only to feed mill for livestock and poultry, while the well milled white rice we usually eat is high in cholesterol and sugar,” said DAF-ARMM Assistant Secretary Eugene Strong.
Strong said thepush for the consumption of brown rice is to make it more accessible and affordable to general public as the agriculture department believes hunger and malnutrition are huge setbacks in national development.
