Day 1 of class opening: Toppled tree hurts 4 in South Cotabato
KORONADAL CITY –- Four high school students were injured, one of them critically, when a huge narra tree was toppled down by strong wind and heavy downpour in Lake Sebu, South Cotabato on the first day of classes Monday.
Police Major Nathaniel Panaguiton, Lake Sebu town police chief, said one of the four students, Albert Datal Timbang, 19, sustained serious head injuries and was rushed to South Cotabato provincial hospital in Koronadal City.
Panaguiton said Timbang and three other high school students, all female, sought shelter in a covered pathway of Lake Sebu National High School when strong winds and heavy down pour occurred at about 11:30 a.m.
The wind toppled the huge narra tree that fell on the covered pathways where the victims sought shelter.
The other victims, aged 16 to18 years old, sustained minor bruises and are now confined at Lake Sebu Emergency Hospital. They are now out of danger, police said.
A motorbike parked at the pathway was also damaged.
