Drunk man hurt by own grenade in North Cotabato

ALEOSAN, North Cotabato - A farmer who came from a drinking spree and heading for home was hurt when a hand grenade in his pocket accidentally fell and went off in Barangay Tomado here Saturday night.Senior Inspector Edwin Abantes, Aleosan town police chief, identified the victim as Aderiano Takandong Candole, 54, farmer and resident of Barangay Tomado.Abantes, in a report to North Cotabato police office, said Candole was walking home at 6 p.m. from a drinking spree in the village and put his fragmentation grenade on his pant's front pocket.As he walked, it fell off the ground. As he was about to pick it up, the undetermined explosive went off, hurting his palm and chest, Abantes said.Responding village officials rushed him to Aleosan District Hospital in Barangay Dualing. He was later moved to Cotabato Regional and Medical Center for further treatment.Barangay Chairman Ernesto Dela Serna Jr. of Tomado informed the police about the incident the next day.It was not clear why Candole was in possession of an explosive.
