Friday the 13th highway mishap kills 4, hurt 28 in Sarangani
KORONADAL CITY
– Four persons were killed and 28 others were seriously injured when a truck
they were riding lost its brake system crash on the roadside in Malungon,
Sarangani province this morning.
It was a case
of malfunctioned brake system, Supt. Aldrin Gonzales, spokesperson of Police
Regional Office 12 said in a phone interview of the Friday the 13th
highway mishap in Purok Buayan, Barangay Malandag.
Gonzales said
the Fuso cargo truck loaded with 32 persons and driven by Bebing Tacyawan was
heading to Maasim, also in Sarangani when the highway crash happened at 11:45
a.m.
One of the
survivors who introduce herself as Jessamie told radio reporters that the
driver alerted everyone that the truck’s brake system has malfunctioned and
that he has lost control of the vehicle along the descending portion of the highway.
Jessamie said
they were all from Kiblawan in Davao del Sur and were to attend a wedding
Saturday in Maasim, Sarangani province.
The four were declared
dead on arrival at Malungon District hospital. The injured were rushed by
soldiers and responding disaster workers on hospitals in Gen. Santos City.
Arnel Pinque
of Malungon municipal disaster office identified the fatalities as Joan
Montecino, Cerco Jimenez, Vicente Fernandez and Loreto Villanueva.
