Lanao disaster officialsand People of Wao traumatized by Magnitude 6 quake
WAO, Lanao del
Sur –- Disaster officials here said about 35 houses, two big mosques,
a lodging house and concrete roads with cracks were damaged by a Magnitude 6.0
earthquake that hit this upland town Wednesday dawn.
Ruptures near
the town center were also reported, state seismologist said.
Engr. Ranier
Amilbajar, Cotabato Phivolcs Station head, said more than a dozen aftershocks
were reported following the 5:21 a.m. quake that was traced 6 kilometers from
Wao town center and tectonic in origin.
Aftershocks
are still expected, he said. The strongest aftershock came at 5:59 a.m.
measured at Magnitude 4.0.
Retired
Colonel Kakar Boriongan, Lanao del Sur provincial disaster risk reduction and
management council chair, said two Mosques were among the damaged
structures. Its concrete ceilings and walls
have cracks, forcing disaster officials to cordon off the structure to prevent
people from getting closer.
The people of
Wao were traumatized, especially the elders, as the ground shakes every now and
then since the first quake, he told reporters.

Personnel of the
ARMM’s emergency response unit, the Humanitarian Emergency Response Team (HEART),
is now in Wao distributing emergency assistance to families affected by the
