(UPDATE 4) DSWDand 326 houses, buildings damaged, 6 dead, hundreds hurt in Surigao del Norte quake

COTABATO CITY-- More than 300 homes and buildings were damaged due to a Friday night powerful quake in Surigao City and Surigao del Norte, the social department said.In its website, DSWD central office based its reports from DSWD-Caraga region.In its report, DSWD said 326 houses were damaged, 8 were totally destroyed and 318 were partially damaged in 28 villages.Earlier, the Surigao City council and the Surigao del Norte provincial board have passed separate resolutions declaring state of calamity in the city and the province following a Magnitude 6.7 quake Friday night.Surigao Norte Governor Sol F. Matugas said state of calamity has been declared in 11 towns affected by the earthquakethat hit Surigao del Norte.The worst to hit the area since 1800, at least six persons, other reports said 15,have been killed in the strongest quake to hit Surigao City, Surigao del Norte and nearby provinces, the Surigao del Norte provincial disaster risk reduction and management council reported Saturday.Ramon Gotinga, Surigao del Norte PDRRM officer, said the number of fatalities and injured may increase when all the reports are forwarded to his office.At about 10:30 p.m., a tectonic triggered tremor occurred about 14 kilometers east of Surigao City, the Phivolcs said in a bulletin.Thirty fouraftershocks were recorded by Phivolcs, the latest of which was at 9:45 a.m. in Surigao City measured at Magnitude 2.9.Gotinga, in a statement on its website, said electricity had been shut by Surigao Del Norte Electric Cooperative is slowly restorign power.He added that all flights to and from Surigao City have been suspended by Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) since the Surigao City Airport Runway have cracks.Cracks were also reported in several bridges in the city while buildings have shattered glass panes.
