Infrastructures in Lanao del Sur damaged by tremor
COTABATO CITY --- The tremor that hit parts of central Mindanao early Wednesday destroyed a mosque and other buildings in Lanao del Sur where it was felt strongest.In its latest advisory, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the epicenter of the Magnitude 6 earthquake was a kilometer underneath Wao town in Lanao del Sur.Lanao del Sur is a component province of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), which also covers Maguindanao and the scattered islands of Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.Salma Jayne Tamano, provincial information officer of Lanao del Sur, said on Monday that a mosque in Barangay Sallam in Amai Manabilang town, within short distance from Wao, was destroyed by the earthquake.Two buildings in Barangay Sumungot in the same town were also damaged as reported by local officials to the office of Lanao del Sur Gov. Bedjoria Soraya Alonto-Adiong. Some portions of concrete highways straddling through Amai Manabilang and Wao were also damaged, Tamano said.Tamano said they also received a report purporting that two hectares of corn and coffee farms in Amai Manabilang got covered with soil and debris that cascaded from hills, apparently loosened by the strong earthquake. The ARMM’s Humanitarian Emergency Assistance and Response Team (HEART) immediately dispatched a team to Wao to help the Lanao del Sur provincial government assess the situation of affected villagers.
