Father tried, failed to kill 2 children in South Cotabato

KORONADAL CITY – Afraid he could not feed and raise them, a carpenter tried to hack
to death his two children after his wife left them in Tupi, South Cotabato,
police said.
Chief
Inspector Rey Egos, Tupi town police chief, said John Fritz Escalada, 44, of
Barangay Polonoling, Tupi, South Cotabato, was obviously depressed after his
wife, who was not identified, left them.
He told police
investigators he wanted to end his life and his children because he does not
know how to feed and raise them.
At 6 a.m. today,
Holy Thursday, Escalada held hostage his two children inside the family owned
house. First, Escalada hacked his elder daughter on her knee and arm. But the daughter managed to run outside the
house.
However, Escalada,
grabbed his 6-year-old son and repeatedly stabbed him six times, Egos said.
When the
police arrived, he refused to let go of the younger kid. Despite repeated
appeal from police and Tupi Mayor Reynaldo Tamayo Jr, Escalada refused to
surrender.
Egos said the
police barged inside the house, brought the injured child and rushed him to the
hospital while arresting Escalada.

machete, a knife and a metal fabricated as bladed weapon inside the suspect’s
house. It was not clear why the wife abandoned them.
The children
are now recuperating at the South Cotabato Provincial Hospital in Koronadal
City while Escalada is behind bar facing frustrated parricide charges.
