Barangay chairman, 2 cohorts in deadly Basilan ambush surrender

COTABATO CITY - A barangay chairman and his two accomplices in the gun attack on Monday night in Lamitan City, Basilan that left two elders of a rival who contested his reelection bid dead surrendered to authorities Wednesday.

Abdullah Panglias, who lost in his reelection bid for the chairmanship of Barangay Balagtasan in Lamitan City, and his followers, Abzhar Panglias and a volunteer community watchman named Jhulbin Suntul, are now clamped down in a police detention facility.

Municipal health worker killed in South Cotabato gun attack

COTABATO CITY - Police probers are still clueless about the fatal ambush on Friday night of an employee of the Municipal Health Office in Polomolok town in South Cotabato.

Brig. Gen. Jimili Macaraeg, director of the Police Regional Office-12, said on Monday that the victim, Ezekiel Cruz Evangelista, 42, died on the spot from bullet wounds sustained in the attack.

Evangelista was riding his motorcycle on his way home to Purok Mauswagon in Barangay Lumakil, Polomolok when he was attacked by two men armed with pistols, positioned along the route.

Magnitude 5.9 quake hits Davao de Oro, classes suspended in New Bataan town

DAVAO CITY – A magnitude 5.9 quake rocked Davao region Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology office said.

Tectonic in origin, the tremor struck at 2:58 a.m. and its epicenter was traced 35 kilometers east of New Bataan, Davao de Oro.

It has a depth of 13 kilometers.

New Bataan Mayor Geraldford Balbin suspended classes at all levels on Friday, Oct. 20, following the earthquake.

Tough Lamitan City traffic enforcer shot dead

COTABATO CITY --- Gunmen shot dead on Saturday morning in Barangay Maganda in Lamitan City, Basilan a local government unit traffic enforcer popular for his toughness in enforcing thoroughfare ordinances.

In a statement released at noontime Saturday, the Lamitan City Police Station said the victim, Abas Sarabi Sumapil, died on the spot from bullet wounds in the head.

Sumapil was riding his motorcycle on his way to a bakery in Sitio Tinambakan in Lamitan City when he was attacked by gunmen along the route.

3 killed in Gingoog City ambush

COTABATO CITY - Three in a cargo truck loaded with motorcycles were killed in a daring ambush on Tuesday morning in Gingoog City in Misamis Oriental.

In separate initial statements dispatched at about 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, the Gingoog City Police Station and the Misamis Oriental Provincial Police Office confirmed the atrocity that left a truck driver and two companions, all workers of a motorcycle store in Cagayan de Oro City, dead.

4 dead in Zamboanga City highway accident 

COTABATO CITY - Four laborers died instantly in a highway accident involving two cargo trucks in Barangay Licomo in Zamboanga City on Tuesday morning.

Quoting an initial report from the Zamboanga City Police Office, radio news here on Tuesday identified the fatalities as Roseller Tomotong, Ariel Lipay, Bobong Magat, and a certain Noli, who were together in a truck loaded with some 30 pigs from Zamboanga Del Norte province that they were to deliver to the buyer in Zamboanga City.

10 soldiers hurt in Zamboanga Norte highway mishap

COTABATO CITY – Ten soldiers were hurt when the light truck carrying them rolled over while its driver was maneuvering through a downhill stretch of a highway in Sergio Osmeña, Zamboanga del Norte at noontime Sunday.

Col. Glen Dulawan, Zamboanga del Norte provincial police director, said on Monday that four of the 10 soldiers hurt in the accident, driver Cpl. Daryl John Cor and companions Cpl. Robin Samillano, Pvt. Rolando Fundador and Pvt. Marvin Agipo, are all confined in a hospital.

5-member GenSan shabu peddling gang busted

COTABATO CITY - Plainclothes police agents seized P612,000 worth of shabu from a five-member group that fell in a sting in Barangay Mabuhay in General Santos City late Tuesday.

Brig. Gen. Jimili Lopez Macaraeg, director of the Police Regional Office-12, said the suspects, Randy Armetia Jimenez, Mae Mendoza Jimenez, Sherwin Tumbaga Basir, Ruel Nuñez Candawan, and Danilo Gellasa Crisostomo are now detained, to be prosecuted for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

COTABATO CITY — Lamitan City marks a new milestone in the fight against the drug menace after a Balay Silangan Reformation Center was inaugurated at Barangay Maganda, Lamitan City, on September 13, 2023.

Lamitan City Balay Silangan is the 26th established in the region.

The said inauguration was spearheaded by Mayor Roderick Furigay, along with PDEA Regional Director Christian O. Frivaldo, CESE, and Basilan Provincial Governor Jim Hataman-Salliman, who graced the event as the guest of honor and speaker.
